9 months ago this week Breanna left the USAF. Her separation left us full of emotions. Anger, frustration, confusion, betrayal, you get the idea. For those of you who werent here for the 8 months from hell, here is a very short description. Breanna was 2 weeks from graduation when she was injured by a moron who was a cadre at Warrior week in BMT.
She spent 8 months at Lackland in various stages of physical therapy, orthopedic evaluations etc. The final straw that ended up breaking the camels back, was one day she was called out to run for her final PT eval. Now keep in mind, she had been sitting in a med hold flight for almost 7 months and she missed the time on her 1.5 mile run by mere seconds. So she was discharged.
We did not know at that time, the conditions of her discharge. She was too devastated to realize exactly what her MTI's and her squadron commander did for her. In fact, we just found out. She was not ELS'd. She was honorably discharged, with an RE code that will expire in February 2009. She was given a DD214 (honorable) AND her Airmans wings. At this time, the USAF was "cutting back" and she was basically one of those who came home. People were being sent home left and right, but not all of them were honorably discharged.
If this is all clear as mud to you, it all boils down to this. The Air Force didnt disown her, they took ownership of her as much as was possible at that time. They sent her home honorably to heal with the door open for her to return after February 2009. She wont be going back as enlisted personnel, but it will be much easier for her to commission. Her status will be just like she fulfilled her required time and opted to discharge, instead of being thrown out because she was injured.
I dont know why this gives me peace, but it does. So next year at this time, we will see if she wants to go ROTC or just comission back in after her Sophomore year in college. Its all up to her!
