What would you do? A rant.

I do not mean for this post to be judgemental or to sound harsh but this topic has been on my mind all day. And I have an opinion!

If you lived in New Orleans or Mississippi and found yourself in another situation with a possible category 5 hurricane headed DIRECTLY towards you, would you leave???? I can tell you what I would do, I would be out of there in a freaking heartbeat. There are thousands of people evacuating the area as I write this, headed to higher and safer ground. Kudos and applause go out to all of them..

But on the other hand there are many people who refuse to leave. I just want to scream at these good folks "WHAT DIDNT YOU LEARN FROM KATRINA?????".

WHY arent these people seeking safety? I just heard on CNN that over 7,000 people in Mississippi are still living in FEMA housing, they have evacuated that area by order of the National Guard, bottom line, if you are living in government housing, you do what the government tells you to do. According to CNN these people may not have left without being told to..

I do not understand the mindset of those who stay, I really dont. We, as Americans, took a huge hit when Katrina struck. We were devastated and rallied together, with all of our resources to help those in need. I know several EMS workers, Nurses, and Firefighters who deployed to New Orleans and that immediate area and worked with no power, no AC, no clean water, etc to help those less fortunate than us.

Is this refusal to leave kind of a slap in the face to those who really worked hard to help during Katrina? I think it is.. I think our responsibility for those who have made this decision should end right here. I am appalled and bordering on livid.

Am I wrong to feel this way? What do you guys think? Again, I dont mean to offend anyone, I am just curious as to what leads someone to think this way.

25 Random things about me.

Lisa, at My New Thing To Do has just suggested that we all post some random things about us for our fellow bloggers and readers. So here goes:

1. When I was 7 yrs old I had a horrible case of the chicken pox and ended up with a scar on the pupil of my left eye. I began wearing ONE hard contact lens on that eye when I was 11 and wore it for 2 years.

2. I was a "Pepperette" in high school, grades 9, 10 and 11 and was chosen by the squad as drill leader for my Senior year, when I was blackballed by one of our sponsers and not chosen to be on the team. Talk about devastation! I was devastated, my teammates were devastated, our other sponsers were devastated etc. He decided I wasnt thin enough for his liking. I went on to join the debate team and became a state qualifying cross ex debater. He went on to become a cocaine addicted lounge lizard and is probably in jail somewhere. LOL (or laying in a gutter)

3. I was born in Kalispell Montana and lived on a ranch when I was very young in a house that was built by my dad and my uncle.

4. I once helped a baby bear cub into the backseat of our station wagon while we were driving through Yellowstone park. Much to my mothers dismay!

5. I missed 40 days out of the 2nd quarter of my Junior year in high school, I was skiing...

6. I always wanted to be an attorney and still do.

7. I went into Nursing because I was very good at science and it was a goal that was achievable by someone who was looking to get out of a horrible marraige and still be able to make a living as a single parent.

8. I am very very good at what I do, have proven myself as a leader and am often used as a resource person for new employees and new nurses in the ER.

9. I want to start a "doggie day care" in the next 9 years so I can "retire" from nursing and still make enough money to pay the bills.

10. I spent 21 yrs of living hell in an abusive marraige with a man whom I loathed. From about year 5 until today.

11. Red is my new favorite color

12. Aspen Colorado and Ocean City MD are two of my favorite places on earth

13. I have always wanted to take a cruise to somewhere tropical

14. John Denver is my favorite musician

15. I used to speak fluent German (took 6 yrs in high school and 2 yrs on college)

16. I LOVE to play softball and was on the first recorded female team at my old Alma Mater (Breannas current college)

17. I am a HUGE Denver Bronco fan and when I was in my early teens I used to keep very careful statistics on the team.

18. I once met Bobby Anderson, number 11, fullback for the Denver Broncos and he signed a football for me.

19. I have had 2 vehicles stolen, one was recovered intact, the other was rolled, stripped and set on fire.

20. I have owned 5 basset hounds over the last 28 years and I have realized that my all time favorite canine breed is a dachshund.

21. I once stood in line wearing a paper bracelet to get Garth Brooks concert tickets to see him in concert in Tulsa OK on a Saturday night.

22. my favorite foods are crab legs, macaroni and cheese and Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream.

23. I have always wanted to own my own horse. And I am the only member of my immediate family that has never had the chance.

24. I am a registered Cherokee Indian (along with both of my parents and my sisters) and have been the recipient of Indian Health services and Indian benefits when I lived in Oklahoma and Kansas.

25. I met my husband Dana on the INTERNET!! Neither of us were looking to make a match online but over the course of a year and a half we did, and we married.

V-A-C-A-TION!!!!

The word conjures up all kinds of thoughts doesnt it? For me, this time, it means 7 glorious days off from work with nothing in particular to do. Yes folks, I might even get to have a normal life for the next week. "Normal" being defined as waking up when its daylight outside and going to bed when its dark outside. Eating dinner around the same time as other people and being able to go shopping during the day! At least lets hope my week is normal.

I have no particular plans in mind, Dana and I are going to be taking another week and a half off in September when we might get to go out of town.

After I get some sleep I might even feel like a normal person!! WOO HOO!

Ramblings.....

Once in a while I just have to ramble and today is one of those times. We have several things going on, none of them seriously important. Breanna is in week #2 of college. She loves it. She is loving concert choir and has really enjoyed getting back into the music world again. They are going to have 2 performances coming up this semester. I hope to take off those nights (both Fridays) so I can go see her.

Her classes are good, she has really found her niche I think. Her webpage design instructor asked her why she took the class because she is already so far ahead of everyone else. She thought she had to take this class in order to get in the advanced class. So he gave her the option to test out or to stay in and work on a project of her choice, she decided to stay in. She is going to act as his TA to help the other students.

She has worked every day since school started and today she has an afternoon off. A much needed break.

This week, on Thursday, I will start a one week vacation and Dana and I are going to do something fun this weekend, dont know what it will be yet but we will do something. Its nice to look forward to being off of work for a change. we havent had a vacation in almost 2 years. We are taking 11 days off in September, originally we were going to Las Vegas but those plans have changed, so I think we are going to head down to southwestern Colorado and visit Mesa Verde towards the end of the week and the beginning of the week we are going to Denver.

And now some Rambling thoughts:

What do the attendees at the DNC do in the mornings if they only convene in the evenings?

WHY did I have to spend 7.5 hours in a 4 hour recert class yesterday??? Someone needs to tell some of these nurses if you dont know the subject matter DONT take the recert class! ARGGG

How did Hallie make it through her childhood without a sock monkey??

What is that huge growth on the left side of John McCains face?? I cant find the answer to this question. I know he had cancer and he was a POW but what the heck is that golf ball sized thing on his jaw???

And finally... with bigotry and racism ever be overcome in our society? Sadly, I am not sure it will..

Is there such a thing???

As "blogging rules"? This just came to thought as I was reading through my blog list trying to stay updated on my blogger friends' lives when I had a few minutes before getting ready to go to work last night.

I have a list of much loved blogs but sometimes the people who own the blogs dont keep them updated. I am still checking them, some have not been updated since June and some not since July. This causes a dilemma. Are their blogs dead? Have they stopped blogging and have no intention to start again? Did they forget they HAD a blog???

I dont want to miss anything(we can officially call this a blogging obsession)and I have hesitated to remove them from my list of favorites because I DONT WANT TO MISS IT IF THEY START TO BLOG AGAIN! what to do, what to do?

What do you guys do?

Thankful Thursday

I think I missed last weeks Thankful Thursday, there were a few other things going on, but here I am back again for Thankful Thursday for this week. Here are just a few of the things I am thankful for, some may be important some may be trivial but I am thankful for them all nonetheless.

1. of course my family and my job, I am thankful for them every day

2. Our beautiful weather this week, not a single day over 100!!

3. Diet Pepsi (as I have said before, it keeps me going)

4. Breannas experience in college thus far, I think she has found the path to her dreams!

5. Ben and Jerrys Karamel Sutra ice cream, my comfort food this week

6. my friends online and here at home, they always make me laugh.

7. That Hurricane Fay, didnt take many Floridians with her and that she isnt paving the pathway for 11 more Hurricanes.

8. For all of your bloggers out there, without your blogs I wouldnt have realized how fun the blogging world is!

How Times Have Changed..

Yesterday, we went to Borders for a few hours. I just love going there, sitting and reading for a while. It is very relaxing to me, Dana browses the books and enjoys spending time there too. It is a really fun way to pass the time once in a while. Bre was with us and she did some shopping, so we all had a good time.

Anyway, we had the opportunity to stop by yesterday. I got a book and went to the cafe to have a seat, (it was somewhere around 2:00pm and we thought it wouldnt be busy) and lo and behold, what did I see??? 10 men scattered throughout the cafe and only ONE woman! This struck me as incredibly weird, since it was afternoon and all but one of these men were in the age group that should be out working. IN FACT.... at a table there were 6 construction guys, sitting there in their construction worker outfits, sipping Latte`s and munching on pastries..

When did times change? The only woman in the entire cafe (not including me) was an elderly woman who was reading magazines.

Has the womens movement gone so far that the women are now out working and the men are now staying at home? (or in this case, spending the afternoon perusing hunting and motorcycle magazines in the Borders cafe???)

It just makes me go hmmmmm.. No one else would probably notice this but I was a Sociology minor in college and the tendency to observe mores of society has stuck with me all of these years..

I am wondering if we as a group should rethink this womens lib thing. LOLOLOL ;-)

News From the College girl!

Breanna made the concert choir!! Today was open try-outs, she said there were about 80 students there. The choir director was very impressed with her voice, she ran the scale from tenor to 1st soprano. She made Soprano.

He also asked her if she has had professional voice lessons, she has not. She sang in choir from grades 6 through 12, but had no professional lessons. He is encouraging her to take private lessons next semester. Maybe she can get in some solos!

Her day was awesome again, she is love love loving college life and being with other students her age. She is sporting a huge smile too. YAY!

Her job is good, she is working about 30-35 hours per week and soon she will be shopping for her 1st car. Shuttling our 2 back and forth is a little challenging but not a problem, so once she figures out how much she will bring home each month while in school, she can decide on how much she can pay on a car payment.

SO! tomorrow is another day! thank you God!

1 day down, many more to go!

Bre made it through her 1st day of college without a hitch! She is having a blast. Her classes are fun (for the most part) web page design is kind of booorrrinngg... and she has used the American Government textbook already in her AP government class in High School, but I am sure she will learn from it again.

She loves her Astronomy class and her professor is a Russian Professor who was on the committee to decide whether Pluto should be considered a planet or not. She said he is awesome.

YAY for day one!!! she even found some of her friends on campus and went to work after class. Tomorrow she tries out for womens chorus..

To all of you who stop by and read my blog and make comments now and then. I cant tell you how much fun I have blogging and reading everyone elses blogs, leave it to the internet to give me something else to look forward to every day. I spend way too much time online anyway! HAHA

I am a firm believer in things happening for a reason and I know am so happy that you all are with me!

Tomorrow is Breannas first day of college, she is excited and nervous. Please keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer that she will have a great time and make the best of it. She has to work immediately after class so we wont get to hear about it until she gets home.

well I dont think it is technically a full moon until tomorrow night, but believe me, it has been a full moon in the ER. The crazies have been unleashed! And I can honestly say that they are out of control!

Word of Warning!

I had the bright idea that I wanted to change the background of my blog, and I found a really good site with lots of free layouts. (See the add at the top of the blog) BUT... I didnt get the part about saving my page elements.

UH OH.... I lost them all. It was hideous.

Now I have reconstructed my page elements with a little extras thrown in, how do you like it??

Beware of Dog??

This is Max. He thinks he is a guard dog.. He is not. LOLOL Max came into our lives in February of 2008. We adopted him from Utah Friends of Basset Hounds rescue. We drove to Salt Lake City, with no idea of what dog we would be bringing home, and after looking at several, we found Max.

He is approximately 5 yrs old and spent the majority of his first 4 years living in a crate in his own waste. When he was found and placed into rescue he had urine burns on his bottom from lying in his own urine. His hair was even missing in these areas.

Max is the most loving, gentle and cuddly basset I have ever owned, and I have owned 6 bassets in the last 28 years, so I can say this with authority. We are thankful that Max chose us.....

Please support your local rescues folks!! Dont Shop, ADOPT!!!

CRS Syndrome!!

I most certainly have developed CRS syndrome. For those of you not familiar or not near the age that it will hit you, CRS syndrome is defined as "Cant Remember Shit Syndrome". There is a time in your life when your memory will take a vacation, and you will be left with only an empty shell where your memory once was..

I will be 51 next month. I dont know what 51 is supposed to feel like, (I still feel like I am in my late 20's or early 30's) but with the age comes the big M.... MENOPAUSE. I think I started through menopause a couple of years ago, but last fall was the first time I realized it. I can endure the hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness (better living through chemicals is my motto) but this memory thing (or lack of it) is driving me NUTS!!

For instance, Breanna's cell phone broke today, she needs to get another one. We have insurance on all of our phones, but I cant remember if we have had any claims this year. We only get 3 per year and Dana has this problem with his cell phones wanting to go swimming in toilets...

My long term memory is sharp as a tack, I just dont remember the short term stuff. Do I need that vitamin that helps the memory?? ( I cant remember its name LOL) OR is it early Alzheimers... Lord I hope not!

And as a disclaimer, I used to juggle a full time job with 3+ committee commitments, Breannas full time school schedule, danas schedule, Coordinating a program of forensic nurses and spending time online visiting with my friends.

Does this every get better??

Why??

Have you ever asked yourself why somethings happen? I have been thinking this as I trudge my way through yet another 3 days of work... I am asking myself why...

1. why do my days off go so quickly and my days to work go so slowly?

2. why is it that the lane that I am driving in is always the one that moves slower than the rest and when I change lanes then THAT is the one the is going slow?

3. why is it that when I need the extra money, our payroll dept always screws up my paycheck and I have to make them cut me ANOTHER check 2 or 3 days later?

4. Why is it that we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

5. Why is it that when we want to order pizza the pizza places have just closed for the night?

some questions that just make me want to go hmmmmmmm.......

We now have a full fledged...

Bonafide, down to earth real COLLEGE STUDENT!! Breanna had "freshman Orientation" today. She is an official Mesa Maverick! Mom is bursting with pride that she is attending my alma mater, and that of both of my sisters, both of my brother in laws and my niece. Does that make her a Legacy? LOL

She is taking 15 credit hours, and her classes are English Comp, Astronomy, Web Page Design, Music appreciation, and American Government. Her major is Political Science and when she is done she will have a BAA degree in Political Science!

She is walking on cloud nine. I am so excited for her! She has her schedule already set up so she can work in the evenings and on tuesdays and thursdays she only has one class.

Wahoo!! this is us, moving forward.......

She has been accepted!! And Skywatch Friday!

Today is a Happy Day!! Breanna has been accepted into college! She has her Freshman orientation today and she will be able to enroll in classes. Still working on financial aid, but since everything is processed electronically through FAFSA we already have some idea on how much she will get through grants and how much through student loans.

Her major is Political science-Pre Law and she is SO excited!

YAAAY BREANNA!!!! Lets all do the Happy dance...

Thankful Thursday

I have so much to be thankful for, and today is my day of the week to acknowledge it! I give thanks for the following:

1. My job- in an economy where many people are losing their jobs, I am so thankful that I have mine. I feel like I was given a gift when I was accepted into nursing school and given the education that I needed to be able to provide for Breanna and I on my own. I may whine and complain about it now and then, and just like any job it can get frustrating and on my nerves, but I am thankful for it.

2. My family, I am always thankful for my family!!

3. Being able to own our home. Again in an economy where many people are being foreclosed upon, Dana and I were SO fortunate to fall into this home, with a reasonable house payment and payoff date insight..

4. Diet Pepsi, as I have said before, nectar of the Gods. It keeps me going. And going and going and going. LOL on nights where I am really dragging butt at work, Diet Pepsi is my friend.

5. All of my blogging friends. You all have given me insights into your worlds and your homes and your families. And I feel like I know you all personally. Thank you for sharing your lives with me.

One more thing, for those of you who pray, please keep the Twomey family in your prayers. CJ will be travelling home from Florida in a couple of days and we wish he and John a safe trip. The next week is going to be stressful for the whole family. They are always in my thoughts and prayers.

When asked to write about the Ocean, this is what some first graders had to say:

1) - This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles. (Kelly, age 6)

2) - Oysters' balls are called pearls. (Jerry, age 6)

3) - If you are surrounded by ocean you are an island. If you don't have ocean all round you, you are incontinent. ( Wayne, age 7)

4) - Sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily Richardson. She's not my friend any more. (Kylie, age 6)

5) - A dolphin breathes through an asshole on the top of its head. (Billy, age six)

6)- My uncle goes out in his boat with 2 other men and a woman and pots and comes back with crabs. (Millie, age 6)

7) - When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean. Sometimes when the wind didn't blow the sailors would whistle to make the wind come My brother said they would have been better off eating beans. (William, age 7 )

8)- Mermaids live in the ocean. I like mermaids. They are beautiful and I like their shiny tails, but how on earth do mermaids get pregnant? Like, really? (Helen, age 6)

We need a karma fix!!

Do you believe in Karma? I do, and sometimes mine is really bad. It makes me wonder exactly how I ventured off of the good Karma track and onto the "lets see how bad we can screw up things without doing major stuff Karma'. Last week one of those screwed up weeks.

First, I am STILL waiting for my XM radio to be connected. Apparantly with the XM/Sirius merger XM had to make some updates and it just so happened that when we tried to connect my new radio on Monday, it got sent to some outer space satellite station where unconnected radio setups go to die or something and I am in a "pending state". Until who knows when... XM isnt really upset about it, and they credited us for an entire month of service, so here I sit with a $200 investment that I cannot use. grrrrr

Second, our paychecks are ALL messed up. Our one payroll clerk (how can you only have ONE payroll clerk for an entire hospital????) has screwed up my paycheck THREE times since January! This week was the third time. She failed to pay me for 49 hours of differential. Not a huge fact but a couple hundred dollars that is figured into our weekly budget, especially at the beginning of the month. She never works on payday (last Friday) go figure... I have a call in to her.

Danas check is even more messed up, his employer failed to pay him for 48 hours!!!! Now this is a biggie. HELLO... we are talking an entire weeks pay here folks!! He will be dealing with them today, I am not sure if they had their heads in the sand or what when they did his pay. where do these incompetant people come from????

Breannas check was also short... 12 hours. Thats a chunk for her. This is the 2nd time her check has been wrong since June. Again, incompetance...

Third, yesterday when I got up our cable TV was all messed up. I finally got it fixed by a phone call to Bresnan.

I am pretty certain there is some kind of electronic Karma adjustment that needs to be done asap. Next thing to go down is our cell phones...

I have some friends who have decided that the way to break bad Karma is to run naked wearing a flaming boa. I might have to go boa shopping today. LOL

Big News!

I had this post completely written when our router disconnected and I lost everything, now I will try again!!

I'll bet you all thought I was just blowing smoke when I said earlier in the week that we had some exciting news. Well here it is...

Breanna is going to college!! She has been accepted at our local 4 year university, Mesa State College, and as soon as they receive her High School transcripts she will be a bonafide college student! Her major is Political Science-pre law and her plans include possibly transferring to Colorado State University in her Junior year to join Air Force ROTC. This is all depending on whether the USAF will accept her as a commissioned officer. According to the AF recruiter she could re-inlist, but it would take a lot of paperwork, evaluations etc. So hopefully, in 2 years the AF ROTC will take her. She received an honorable discharge, I am sure they will have to evaulate her on an individual case basis. At any rate, she will have a college degree when she is all done, so its all good.

She opted not to join the Navy for 2 reasons, 1st she is just not dedicated to the US Navy. She is an Airman through and through, always has been and always will be. I cant help but think that this dedication was such a big part of her basic training that the loyalty will never die. She explained to me that she just could not put on a uniform other than those blues..

2nd reason is she does not want to join any branch as enlisted personnel. The trend nowadays seems to be to downsize in all different ways and the enlisted guys are the ones being let go. And she has always wanted to be an officer so she is willing to put forth the effort.

We respect her decision and are behind her 100%, we are all buckled up for the ride!!

I have a hot Wiener!!

Frankie absolutely LOVES laying out in the sun! Or sitting in the sun, or playing in the sun. And we have found out that he loves running through the sprinkler too. This brings back visions of Hallies doxie playing in the hose..

Right now it is easily 105 degrees outside and Frankie is on our front porch, with his little half chewed pig ear twist at his side (if he doesnt keep it close Max will "twist-nap" it) just looking around, with a wiener dog smile on his face.. For Frankie, life is good.

Eventually, he will come in to cool off, and lie under the AC and take a nap. Ahhhh a dogs life, what could be better?
