I do not mean for this post to be judgemental or to sound harsh but this topic has been on my mind all day. And I have an opinion!
If you lived in New Orleans or Mississippi and found yourself in another situation with a possible category 5 hurricane headed DIRECTLY towards you, would you leave???? I can tell you what I would do, I would be out of there in a freaking heartbeat. There are thousands of people evacuating the area as I write this, headed to higher and safer ground. Kudos and applause go out to all of them..
But on the other hand there are many people who refuse to leave. I just want to scream at these good folks "WHAT DIDNT YOU LEARN FROM KATRINA?????".
WHY arent these people seeking safety? I just heard on CNN that over 7,000 people in Mississippi are still living in FEMA housing, they have evacuated that area by order of the National Guard, bottom line, if you are living in government housing, you do what the government tells you to do. According to CNN these people may not have left without being told to..
I do not understand the mindset of those who stay, I really dont. We, as Americans, took a huge hit when Katrina struck. We were devastated and rallied together, with all of our resources to help those in need. I know several EMS workers, Nurses, and Firefighters who deployed to New Orleans and that immediate area and worked with no power, no AC, no clean water, etc to help those less fortunate than us.
Is this refusal to leave kind of a slap in the face to those who really worked hard to help during Katrina? I think it is.. I think our responsibility for those who have made this decision should end right here. I am appalled and bordering on livid.
Am I wrong to feel this way? What do you guys think? Again, I dont mean to offend anyone, I am just curious as to what leads someone to think this way.

What would you do? A rant.

Now I could argue with a fence post, but let me say this....I wonder if part of the problem is these people lost everything once and they just don't want to lose it again. I know (and you know) things are just things. But I have never been in a situation where I have lost every thing and the fear of doing it all over again may be just too much.
Then on the other hand....just like you said, hello, did you not learn anything from the last time? But come on, if they are in the track of this major storm, then they need to leave for their safety. Did you see where they are letting people take their pets this time with them??? Thank goodness, it will help make it easie for lots of people.
Good posting...I love good discussions.
I am thrilled that they are letting people keep their pets. At least we learned that lesson from Katrina.
I have read that a lot of those staying behind are illegal and they are afraid they will be sent back to wherever they came from. UGGGGG... dont get me started on that. LOLOL
I agree with you. Right on. But some people don't want to accept personal responsibility. They continue to expect others and the government to bail them out of their bad judgment. The good news is that the evacuation is going very well and MOST people with any sense have high-tailed it out of harm's way.
one thing that bothers me is that the government gave each family alot of money... and I have heard people say that some are hoping for another big storm to hit so they can get more money. Personally I have issues with building and living in a basin that is below sea level in the first place. I realise that things were built and done before we had the knowledge we have now but sheesh seems to me the government woudl say look IF you CHOOSE to rebuild here we will not help as much since you KNOW now that this can and more than likely WILL happen again... kinda like building on a fault line after an earthquake... defies logic to me... Sorry if I offend anyone but you know the storm has not hit yet and over 12 million has already been spent helping people evacuate...
just my 0.02 ya know.
Oh Laura you are in my head! I have heard people say that too, about hoping another storm comes along!
I just heard some person on TV saying she wont leave because after Katrina it was too much of a hassle to get home. WTF?????
Laura's comment is exactly what I was thinking and I know that if another disaster like Katrina happens with this storm and people don't leave when they have the opportunity I will have to think really hard about helping out again because to me that is just asking for trouble and looking for a handout.
I think they are staying to protect their property. They are honoring those people, but if they step off of their property, they'll be arrested. I think we won't see all the looting this time. But that being said, my fear of drowning is far greater than my love of my grandmother's silver! I would be long gone!
utah nationalgaurdsmen go down because of not only the stubbornwess of neworleaneons, but also government who are shortsided...that is all it is shortsightedness...
I had friends who went down during Katrina to help. I totally agree that it is a slap in the face to emergency workers. It's like "go ahead come back. Your life is worth even less than mine is". You know they will want help again!!!
I would take my hubby, kids, dogs, pictures and get the heck out of there! I don't understand the mentality of staying either, unless they have nothing to lose
:(.
